Horticultural Professional Development (HPD) Program

Hands-on training for the next generation of horticultural professionals

The Horticultural Professional Development (HPD) Program is a structured summer program designed to combine hands-on field experience with guided coursework for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the horticultural industry.

The program provides participants with direct exposure to professional landscape operations while working alongside experienced staff. It is designed for motivated high school and college students who want to develop practical skills, industry knowledge, and professional habits in a real-world setting. Learning opportunities may include hands-on training, field trips to regional gardens and industry events, lectures, and guided or self-directed study. Participants are expected to demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a genuine interest in learning throughout the program.

The HPD Program is offered at no cost to participants, and participants are paid an hourly wage. Applicants must be at least 14 years of age, live within reasonable travel distance of Gardners, Pennsylvania, and have reliable transportation. Participants must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Applicants under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian approval to participate. Enrollment is limited, and acceptance into the program is competitive.

HPD participants are employees of McCleaf Landscaping, LLC and are expected to meet the same standards of professionalism, safety, and conduct as all employees. Admission to the program is contingent upon meeting company employment requirements, which may include drug screening, proof of employment eligibility, and other applicable conditions prior to beginning the program.

During the program, participants engage in structured learning across six core areas through a combination of coursework, hands-on experience, field exposure, and certification opportunities.

Core areas of study include:

  • Safety

  • Plant Biology, Taxonomy, and Morphology
